What We Do

This is where the magic happens!

Farmhouse Décor & Furniture

Well, not magic, per se. “Magic” sounds like we wave a wand and all our projects are good as new. This is where we at Inspired By The Farm get down into the really nitty-gritty part of our business: you know, the fun part! Here, you can learn all about our process and what really goes into all of the projects that we take on.

Our philosophy at Inspired By The Farm boils down to three key principles, what we like to call our variation on the Three Rs: reuse, renew, relive. Catchy, right? We don’t just peddle this slogan: we live it. We’re all about taking what once was good about our farm-raised heritage and reinvigorating it for today’s fast-paced world. We slow down, take deep breaths, and remember the smell of the hay in the barn loft, picking daisies in the field, the joy of feeding newborn bottle calves. We think about where we’ve come from, all that the earth has given us, and how we can give back.

That’s the feeling we want to share with you, and this is our medium.
Here’s how we do it:

Reuse

Do you ever drive through the countryside, down old dirt roads between cattle and fields of tall grass and wildflowers? Those lazy weekend drives when you have all the time in the world and nowhere to be. You pass by some fairly new homes, well-lived in, and up on your right, you spot an old barn: the red paint is weathered away and the roof is collapsing, but you can’t help smiling at your own memories of a barn just like that one. A sort of bittersweet smile, wishing that someone would just care enough to put a little love back into it.

That’s exactly what we specialize in. That barn may not stand in that spot forever, but we collect the wood, pieces of the past with history ingrained into every board, and we create something special that will live on in new ways. From a traditional family harvest table to a custom computer desk for one of our graphic designer friends, we take those old, well-worn “scraps” and transform them into something that someone else, someone like you, will love again.

Renew

Some pieces are still in great shape or have minimal damage. Old wagon wheels, milk cans, and other pieces of vintage farm décor that we may clean up a little and sell more or less “as-is.” At Inspired By The Farm, rust and dust are our friends. It’s hardy, it shows character, and it reminds us of where those items came from.

Others need a little more TLC, so these are our more intensive projects. Maybe a beautiful old table needs a new leg. Maybe an old washstand needs a new door and a fresh coat of paint. We look at each piece and try to see the potential in it, not just the flaws. We take those ideas and we run with them, giving them the special Inspired By The Farm touch to freshen them up. Sometimes, all a piece really needs is someone who cares enough to put in the time and love.

Relive

Remember that old house in "It’s A Wonderful Life"? The one George and Mary threw rocks at to make wishes? Mary loved that old house, and she wanted to live in it someday. George laughed, but they fixed up that old house with their own personal touches and made it their home. Sure, it wasn’t quite the same as it was before, but that was the beauty of it: it started with good bones, and they made it all their own while still preserving what they loved most about it.

We don’t just want to remember the past; that’s too passive. We want to actively participate in the memories of each project, which means making new ones, too! Inspired By The Farm takes what is wonderful about old pieces and preserves that while also recognizing that we do live in a different time. We rethink what used to be and focus on what could be.

At Inspired By The Farm, we put lots of time, care,
and love into each one of our projects.

Every piece we create has our own personal touch because we do all the work ourselves. We don’t buy manufactured items to resell to you, and we don’t make other people put in the labor so we can take credit for it. It’s just us here, making each special piece with a uniquely inspired story.

red island with walnut top
I could not be happier with my new island made by Dick Rees. For several years we've talked about purchasing an island. We've looked, and looked, but never really seemed to find what I was looking for. I met Dick, and his wife Carol while buying a couple of wagon wheels from them and saw some of the furniture he had made while there. I talked to him about what I wanted in an island, and he went above, and beyond my expectations. This beautiful one-of-a-kind island is made of old red barn siding and tin. How cool is that? The top is a gorgeous walnut, and will wear well with all my baking, cooking classes, and homemade goods. Besides the beauty, it is stocked full of storage with drawers, and cabinets on both sides.  Thank you, Dick Rees, for making my dream island!
